Basant Panchami 2013, Saraswati Puja 2013

Basant Panchami is a famous festival of India which represents the glory and splendour of spring season. It is mainly a Hindu festival and is celebrated in Northern part of India with full joy and enjoyment. In Basant Panchami, meaning of word ‘Basant’ is spring and meaning of ‘Panchami’ is the fifth day of spring season.

The festival has seasonal as well as social importance. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati and this day is considered as the birthday of Goddess Saraswati. People organise Saraswati puja on this day. They offer yellow clothes and sweets to Goddess and also wear yellow clothes. They offer yellow flowers to Goddess and also apply turmeric tilak on their forehead. They also prepare kesar halwa of yellow colour at home.

This festival falls on the 5th day in the month of Magh according to Hindu calendar or in the month of January or February according to Gregorian calendar.

Some people also worship their ancestors on this day and offer Pitri-Tarpan to them. It is also believed to be an auspicious day for children to start their study.

This festival declares the arrival of spring season. You can see the fresh life in tress and crops. You can see the yellow flowers of mustard crop in fields and it looks like as the field is completely covered with gold. Youth celebrate this festival by flying colourful kites in the sky. This kite festival in Punjab attracts many people from all over the world. Spring season brings new joy and life in people.

So, the festival of Basant Panchami brings new joy and happiness among people and is celebrated with full enjoyment.
